Amen: Does Prayer Play An Important Role In Our Lives Today? :: essays research papers
Amen: Does Prayer Play An Important Role In Our Lives Today? à à à à à Does prayer play an important role in our lives today? The minority would say no and that prayer shouldn't ever have played an important role in our society. But, the simple fact of the matter is that for hundreds of years, prayer in school has been encouraged by both society and government. In recent years, it has been established that prayer in schools has led to a steady moral decline. Morals must be taught, in school and at home, and they cannot be properly taught without religion as a much needed stepping stone. à à à à à Our government was based upon religious beliefs from the very beginning. The Declaration of Independence says: ââ¬Å"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by God with certain unalienable rights. . .â⬠Certainly, it talks about God, creations, God-given moral rights, the providence of God, and the final Day of Judgment-all of which are religious teachings. And school prayer has been an important part of our religious experience from the very beginning. à à à à à Our very First Amendment didn't separate God and government but actually encouraged religion. It reads: ââ¬Å"Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, nor prohibit the free exercise thereof,â⬠(Encarta 96). The first part simply says that the federal government cannot establish one religion for all of the people. The simple idea of everyone in our nation being limited to one form of religion is inconceivable. The second section insists that the government should do nothing to discourage religion. But forbidding prayer in schools discourages religion, doesn't it? à à à à à Early congressional actions encouraged religion in public schools. For example, the Northwest Treaty (1787 and 1789) declared: ââ¬Å"Religion, morality, and knowledge being necessary for good government and the happiness of mankind, schools, and the means of learning shall forever be encouragedâ⬠(Encarta 96). By seeing this, religion, which includes prayer, was deemed to be necessary. Congress has prayed at the opening of every session since the very beginning. By acknowledging these facts we ask the simple question, ââ¬Å" If the government can pray in their sessions, why can't the governed pray in their (school) sessions? à à à à à Public schools had prayer for nearly 200 years before the Supreme Court ruled that state-mandated class prayers were unconstitutional in Engel vs. Vitale in 1962 (Buckley 70). How could this trail have such a huge impact on our nation and ultimately alter how we perceive our constitution? The fact that prayer was practiced for nearly 200 years alone establishes it by example as a

The Mask of Melvilleââ¬â¢s Lawyer in Bartleby
Herman Melvilleââ¬â¢s Bartleby, the Scrivener gives the reader an unnerving, yet nonchalant look at a story of a man dulled by the repetitiveness of urban life. Melvilleââ¬â¢s characters are rife with symbolism, but it is also the many allegories of modern life that makes it so powerful.à Indeed setting the story in 19th century Wall Street portends of the coming wealth and power of New York City, and the real life existence of the characters in Bartleby that predated this prosperity and who continue to exist today. The character of the Lawyer in Herman Melvilleââ¬â¢s Bartleby, the Scrivener is thrust into an outright confusing situation that he has never encountered in his life. ââ¬Å"All who know me, consider me an eminently safe man,â⬠(Melville 2) he says as he describes himself. à Although a lawyer by profession, he does not involve himself with the intricacies and ethics of the law, merely content on dealing with property and other rich menââ¬â¢s businesses. As Davis says: Obviously, the lawyer is a man dedicated to the laws of the earth, and, not only has he dedicated himself to these laws, but deals exclusively with the laws of property, of rich men's bonds and mortgages and title deeds. The narrator seems to hold no interest, or, at the least, no ambition in practicing law that demands of him thoughts of ââ¬Å"higherâ⬠things. à Before the appearance of Bartleby, by the narrator's own admission, he has not struggled with the ethics of justice, of good and evil; rather, he makes his way in this world comfortable by dealing with the physical, the tangible, that which he can know. (2) Relating this idea to Dunbarââ¬â¢s We Wear the Mask, the Lawyer who hires Bartleby has hidden himself from these higher functions from the world, and the people around him, by wearing this mask of feigned simple-mindedness. à ââ¬Å"We wear the mask that grins and lies, It hides our cheeks and shades our eyesââ¬âââ¬Å" (Dunbar 1-2). à It prevents the Lawyer from actually accepting who Bartleby is till the end of the story.à Through the years, this mask becomes ingrained to the personality of the Lawyer, that he fails to understand anything that touches him through this shield. Yet this is exactly what Bartleby does, and what evokes the Lawyer and the readerââ¬â¢s interest at the same time. à We are curious as to who this strange creature is and why he is that odd. à Chisdes provides an interesting comparisonà between the two main characters. This story is a story of contrast between Bartleby and the narrator.à The narrator does everything possible to reach out to his fellow humans; and Bartleby does everything possible to cut himself off from his fellow humans. à Whereas the narrator embraces life, Bartleby rejects it. (Chisdes par. 23) Bartleby does not choose a mask for himself, rather, his has already eroded into the sullen drudgery of office life. à The Lawyerââ¬â¢s narration of his ââ¬Å"rumorâ⬠at the end, of how Bartleby was working at a Dead Letter Office (Melville 37) reveal that although Bartleby changed him, his mask remains on him. à In the words of Mason, ââ¬Å"The lawyer gives Bartleby a peaceful and contentedà ending to diminish his culpability in Bartlebyââ¬â¢s demise.â⬠(par 7). Till the end, the Lawyer does not recognize his relationship with Bartleby outside his mask of pretend virtue. He first decides to place him aside, but with his associates getting curious about this shell of a man in his office, he decides he cannot take anymore. Why should the world be over-wise, In counting all our tears and sighs? à Nay, let them only see us while, We wear the mask. (Dunbar 6-9) The Lawyer cannot stomach this aberration. Not because he is worried about himself, but about what other people think of him. à He only lets the world see him while wearing his mask. At last I was made aware that all through the circle of my professional acquaintance, a whisper of wonder was running round, having reference to the strange creature I kept at my office.à This worried me very much. (Melville 28) Bartleby only serves to highlight this deficiency in the Lawyerââ¬â¢s character, something that is true for each one of us. Dunbarââ¬â¢s poem reflects our inner weaknesses, that we only integrate with culture through a persona. As the Lawyer was presented with someone whom the mask of himself is not affecting, he becomes confused, leading to the darkly humorous events that follow. R E F E R E N C E S Chisdes, Jonathan. Women Should Stay At Home - 996 Words
In todayââ¬â¢s world, we are surrounded by billboards, tv commercials, magazines and newspaper ads. We are always kept up to date with the newest fashions and technology, but what we seem to forget is that we are also surrounded by advertisements promoting or demoting movements such as, abortion, or gay rights. Two extremely memorable advertisements are ones that promote the anti-sexism movement. As a woman and a feminist, these ads really caught my attention and urged me to learn more. Both men and women have endured many conflicts due to sexism; movements such as the UN Women and the #EndAllSexism are some of the proof that people are still fighting and that sexism still exists in todayââ¬â¢s society. In the UN Women ad, there is a black haired, white femaleââ¬â¢s face with the google search engine covering her mouth. Typed in the search engine are two words, ââ¬Å"women shouldâ⬠, correspondingly under are four suggestions for searches: ââ¬Å"women should stay at homeâ⬠, ââ¬Å"women should be slavesâ⬠, ââ¬Å"women should be in the kitchenâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"women should not speak in churchâ⬠. This is where ethos came into play; do I really believe these suggestions popped up on the search engine? So I tested the experiment on Bingââ¬â¢s search engine and after typing ââ¬Å"women shouldâ⬠, the first two suggestions that popped up were: ââ¬Å"women should learn in silenceâ⬠and ââ¬Å"women should make husband number one priorityâ⬠. The Word Posse Comitatus Sounds Like The Name Of A Made Up...
The word Posse Comitatus sounds like the name of a made-up secret society you would only ever hear about by watching Dead Poets Society. Au contraire. The Latin to English translation of Posse Comitatus is ââ¬Å"power of the countyâ⬠and refers to ââ¬Å"all males over the age of fifteen on whom a sheriff could call for assistance in preventing any type of civil disorderâ⬠(Legal Dictionary). It doesnââ¬â¢t quite meet the criteria for a secret society, but appears to be more along the lines of a rather well-known and powerful gang, if you will. And way back when (the 1800s to be exact) sheriffs and marshals in southern states needed all the help they could muster up. Law enforcement agencies were once a shadow of what they are now. Back in yeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The President and Congress have always and will always butt heads, itââ¬â¢s a simple fact of life, but after the 1876 Presidential election, Congress grew increasingly bitter. Troops had been placed in polling places all throughout the South with the intention of stopping any and all ex-Confederate officers from attempting to vote, it seemed reasonable enough at the time considering it was against the law for former Confederate officers to vote. Congress, having been made up of mostly Democrats, was becoming rather frustrated once they realized just who was going to win the Presidential election. What resulted from the supposed intimidation tactics used by the Army at the polling places was the election of Rutherford B. Hayes into Presidential office. Congressââ¬â¢s nightmare certainly came true. As per what usually occurs when you mix a Democratic Congress with a Republican President (or vice versa), butting heads occurred more often than not. Congressââ¬â¢s response to the seemingly highly influenced election of 1876 was the enactment of the Posse Comitatus Act, in order to outlaw the practice of posse comitatus. The suggested purpose behind the enact ment of the Posse Comitatus Act is that Congress wanted to stop the Army from being called to perform miniscule, civilian, law enforcement duties. However, since that initial suggestion, it has been found that

Sample Assignment on Information System
Introduction The definition of a system is that it is a conglomeration of a set of elements that work together so as to achieve a predetermined work. In looking at information system, it is a structure of components arranged together in order to function as one unit. It allows in data not processed and let it get processed and give an output. In order to function as expected, it depends on a number of resources. These resources form the components of information system. The components are described in detail. Information system Components People In any structure, human beings are the drivers of each pertinent issue. In information system, human powers are necessary for the operation. It comprises specialists as well as end users. The end users are people, who get to employ a system for daily routine task such as accountants, clients e.tc. Specialists are people bestowed with the capability of developing the system and operating in the area of information system. They comprise programmers, operators, analysts, etc. (Valacich, Schneider, Jessup, 2014). Hardware/ Software Hardware is the components that can be seen and felt. They comprise the computers, data media, and equipment that are related to the system. The hardware can categorize into computer-system and comprises the processing system and microprocessors. Also, there is the peripheral section which entails all the parts interconnected to the computer for easy functioning (Friedman et al, 2013). Software components entail the non-tangible parts. It is a section that entails logical set of structures realized through construction of a series of instruction. These instructions are arranged so as to run and perform the intended tasks. It is grouped into application and system software. Application software that allow the user carry-out intended tasks whereas the system software are those programs that permit the use of computer resources. They act a platform for all the programs (Friedman et al, 2013). Data These entail all the information which is raw as well as processed. It takes numerous arrangements, comprising conventional alphanumeric-data, comprised of figures and alphabetic and other types that define business dealings and other actions and units. Text-data, involving of sentences employed in written messages; image-data, like graphic forms and numbers; and audio-data, the human speech and other sounds, are as well significant types of data (Valacich, Schneider, Jessup, 2014). Network system A network is an interconnection of computer structures that intended to allow the transfer of information from one part to the other in the network. The arrangement comprises the medium of transferring information and the support-network. The interconnection can be in varied forms for instance ring, star, mesh-types of topologies amongst other topologies. Importance of considering each of the components In designing of the information system, it is critical to know all the resources needed. The need to know the personnel allows the management gets the required skilled people who will develop a system that suits the clients (Friedman et al, 2013). Additionally, the hardware/software is as well critical in know all interfacing procedures necessary for the system to function as needed. They type of data to be processed allow designers come up with a program that can be capable of processing that data. The network permit designer comes up a network topology that is cheap and easy to maintain and use (Friedman et al, 2013). References Friedman, B., Kahn Jr, P. H., Borning, A., Huldtgren, A. (2013).
